Pilates was created by the physical trainer Joseph Pilates in the 1920s with a purpose of rehabilitation. During that time, soldiers returning from war and professional dancers were some of the first people treated by this method. Pilates focuses on flexibility, strength, and body awareness. Exercises are performed on a mat, and some prop may be used like weighted balls.
